Arnica Montana 30 Uses: Bruises vs Toxic Herb, Safety
Arnica montana 30 is the usual home potency of leopard’s bane. Homeopaths classically give it after blunt trauma: the part feels bruised and beaten, the bed is too hard, the patient says he is well and fears being touched. A properly made 30C contains no measurable helenalin. The flowering herb is poisonous by mouth and must not go on broken skin. and FDA-style unsafe-herb lists still caution against oral crude arnica. Arnica 30 is not a CT for concussion and not an ORIF.

This article is for people searching arnica montana 30 uses, Arnica for bruises, or Arnica gel vs globules. It is not a protocol for a head injury that vomits twice, or for painting tincture into a wound.

What Arnica is — and what it is not
Boericke: sore, lame, bruised; bed feels hard; says he is well after a fall; haemorrhage pictures; whooping with bruised chest. Clarke: trauma, overexertion.
It is not:
- a cervical-spine clearance
- heparin for a post-op clot
- a proven pre-op anti-bruise drug (trial results are mixed and small)
- injectable arnica
What the evidence actually says
Topical arnica gels: some small studies on bruising, not consistent high-grade evidence; contact dermatitis is real. Oral herb is toxic. Homeopathic oral Arnica peri-operative trials are mixed; do not cancel the surgeon’s plan.
Head injury: red flags — worsening headache, repeated vomiting, seizure, anticoagulant use, GCS drop — ED, not 1M.
See Bellis (deeper/visceral), Ruta, Symphytum.
Everything about 30C is classical indication.
What Arnica 30 is classically used for
- After a fall or blow — muscle and soft tissue sore, does not want to be examined. Still examine.
- After dentistry or minor procedures as a picture — not an antibiotic.
- Overexertion — marathon soreness rhyme. Rhabdomyolysis is a creatine-kinase problem.
- Whooping chest bruised in old books. Pertussis still Drosera +.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Arnica 30 used for?
Classically, bruised soreness after trauma, a bed that feels too hard, and a patient who minimises the injury. It is not the herb.
Can I swallow arnica tea or flowers?
No. Helenalin is toxic. 30C is not tea.
Arnica gel vs Arnica 30?
Gel is topical plant extract for intact skin, evidence mixed. 30C is an empty-if-proper dilution taken by mouth as a *picture*. Neither sets a bone.
What is the dose of Arnica 30?
A few globules after first aid, then stop. Pre-op 200C rituals are not a substitute for the anaesthetist.
Can I put Arnica on an open wound?
No for herb, Q, or most gels. Use appropriate wound care. [Calendula](/blog/calendula-officinalis-uses) is the classical *surface* tincture conversation — still not inside a deep puncture.
Arnica vs Bellis after surgery?
Arnica: beaten soft tissue. Bellis: deeper pelvic/abdominal bruise. Clot prevention is still the surgeon’s.
How long does Arnica 30 take to work?
No trial window. Repeated vomiting after a head knock is ED.
Is Arnica safe in pregnancy?
Skip oral herb and Q. Trauma in pregnancy is obstetric triage. 30C is empty of helenalin if made properly.
Can children take Arnica 30?
After you have ruled out a serious injury. No tea. No Q. No gel in the mouth.
Does Arnica 30 contain helenalin?
Not at 30C if manufactured properly.
Can Arnica prevent bruising before surgery?
Trials are mixed. Tell the surgeon everything you take. Do not skip VTE advice.
Why does the patient say he is well?
It is a classical mental keynote — stoic, wants to go home. It is not a Glasgow Coma Scale.
