Aspidosperma Uses: Quebracho Breath, Dose, Safety Tips

Aspidosperma is homeopathic Aspidosperma quebracho-blanco (white quebracho). Boericke called it the “digitalis of the lungs”: want of breath on exertion, a sense that the blood is not taking up air. A properly made 30C contains no alkaloid. Bark, extract and mother tincture (Q) can contain aspidospermine-type indole alkaloids and are not a home inhaler. Aspidosperma does not treat asthma, COPD or heart failure. Sudden breathlessness is 108, not a pellet.

What Aspidosperma is — and what it is not

Quebracho blanco is a South American hardwood. The bark was a 19th-century respiratory folk and homeopathic product. Boericke: removes temporary obstruction to oxidation of the blood; want of breath during exertion only; useful in cardiac and asthma pictures as he framed them; dose often tincture or low decimal.

It is not salbutamol, not furosemide, not CPAP, and not a malaria drug. The old WeClinic page said it had “proven highly effective” for asthma and congestion. There is no such trial file.

What the evidence actually says

No reliable RCT shows Aspidosperma 30 improves FEV1, six-minute walk, or heart-failure admissions.

Guideline asthma care is inhaled corticosteroid ± LABA, a written action plan, and a reliever. COPD is similarly device-and-risk-factor medicine. Heart failure is ACE inhibitor/ARNI, beta blocker, SGLT2, mineralocorticoid antagonist, and devices when indicated. A quebracho globule is not on those lists.

If the search is aspidosperma for asthma, keep the inhaler. Do not stop a steroid inhaler because a blog called quebracho “the digitalis of the lungs.” Digitalis itself is a cardiac glycoside with a narrow window — the metaphor is 19th-century poetry, not a dosing guide.

What Aspidosperma is classically used for

Exertional want of breath — the person who is comfortable at rest and hungry for air on a flight of stairs, without much wheeze, is the textbook quebracho picture. That same sentence is also anaemia, obesity, deconditioning, angina and left-ventricular failure. Those get haemoglobin, an ECG, and a chest X-ray, not a bark.

Compare. Arsenicum is restless, anxious, worse after midnight, chilly. Antimonium tart is rattling mucus, too weak to raise it. Blatta is stout, damp, much pus-like mucus. Justicia is a cough-and-bronchitis picture. None of them hold open an airway.

How to take Aspidosperma 30 — only after red flags are gone

• If you are breathless now with chest pain, blue lips, one-word sentences, or swelling of both legs that rose overnight: 108 / 112, not globules.
• Matching mild picture after a clinician has ruled out dangerous causes: 3–5 globules, then stop.
• Keep prescribed inhalers and heart tablets exactly as written.
• Pregnancy: skip Q and bark. New breathlessness in pregnancy is a clot and anaemia work-up.

Q / bark. Alkaloid toxicity is not a parlour experiment (GI, cardiac, neurological possibilities). Emergency care if someone drank a bark decoction and is collapsing.

When to see a doctor

• any new or worsening breathlessness
• known asthma with reliever needed more than twice a week
• known heart failure with sudden weight gain or night breathlessness
• cough with blood, fever, or a swollen leg
