Cantharis 30 is the usual home potency of Spanish fly (Lytta vesicatoria, still labelled Cantharis vesicatoria). Homeopaths classically give it for cutting, burning urine with intolerable urging, a scalded urethra, and burns that blister. It is not a proven UTI antibiotic and not burn first aid. Crude cantharidin and Cantharis Q are vesicants and poisons. A properly made 30C holds none of that toxin.

What Is Cantharis?

Cantharis is the homeopathic preparation of the Spanish fly, a metallic-green blister beetle of family Meloidae. The accepted name is Lytta vesicatoria; Boericke and Clarke keep Cantharis vesicatoria. Indian bottles print Cantharis, Cantharis 30, Canth. ves., 30CH, Spanish fly or Cantharis Q. They mean this beetle, not the soldier-beetle genus Cantharis (Cantharidae), which does not make cantharidin.

Clarke's direction is a tincture or trituration of living insects. That mother tincture can hold cantharidin, a terpenoid vesicant: it blisters skin, burns gut and urethra, and can injure kidneys. Spanish fly sold as an aphrodisiac is the same poison — pelvic burning is irritation, not desire. Fatal oral doses have been estimated in the tens of milligrams.

YCANTH (cantharidin 0.7% topical) is a clinician-applied molluscum drug, not Cantharis 30. Its label warns that swallowing it can be fatal.

The number after the name decides what you are holding. From about 12C / 24X no measurable starting material remains. Cantharis 30 and 200 cannot act as cantharidin. Cantharis Q is still beetle extract in ethanol. Low X and 6C sit close enough to the source to treat as material risk — the split in our side-effects and potency guides.

What Cantharis Is Classically Used For

One theme governs it: raw, burning mucous surfaces — bladder, urethra, and skin scalded into blisters. Boericke: intolerable urging before, during and after the stream; cutting and burning; urine that scalds; tenesmus; bloody drops. Clarke lists vesication and kidney affections as the picture, not as proven cures.

• Burning urination and cystitis picture. Cutting pain, the bladder never feels empty, a few scalding drops, restlessness, and sometimes blood. That is why chemists still sell Cantharis homeopathic medicine for burning urination. It is a match for symptoms, not a stand-in for urine infection care. Fever, loin pain, vomiting, pregnancy, a first UTI in a man, or symptoms in a child need a clinician the same day.
• Burns with blisters. Boericke lists burns and scalds with rawness and smarting. Classical use is a potency by mouth for a small domestic scald after first aid — not a vesicant painted on the wound.: cool running water, no butter, do not break blisters. Large, chemical, electrical or facial burns are emergencies.
• Not an aphrodisiac, eye drop or fever medicine. Old books record sexual frenzy from the crude poison's pelvic congestion. That is toxicology, not a reason to buy Spanish-fly powder. Beetle tincture in an eye can blister a cornea. Shingles and pink-eye listings on shopping sites are keyword stuffing.

Cantharis does not sterilise urine. If this is a UTI, the path is fluids, a urine test when indicated, and antibiotics when indicated.

If the urine is painless, or the only complaint is cloudy smell with no dysuria, this is the wrong guess. Pain at the end of urination is Sarsaparilla before Cantharis.

What the Evidence Says

There is no good randomised evidence that Cantharis 30 or 200 treats UTI, cystitis or burns. This article is classical indication from Boericke and Clarke, not a trial result.

Bacterial cystitis is treated with antibiotics. notes that uncomplicated cystitis in healthy non-pregnant women can often be diagnosed clinically, while culture is needed when the case is complicated, recurrent, male, pregnant, or looks like kidney infection. Untreated infection can climb to the kidney. Globules do not change that.

Crude Spanish fly is a poison. Blistering, bloody urine and kidney injury belong to the beetle, aphrodisiac powders, low X and Q — not to a properly made 30C. Saying "Cantharis 30 destroys kidneys" is as false as saying "Cantharis Q is as harmless as a 30."

Cantharis 30 uses

Cantharis 30 is the chemist-shelf potency people mean by cantharis 30 uses: a sudden scalding cystitis picture, or a small kitchen scald already cooled under water. Typical adult pattern: 4–5 globules up to three or four times on day one, then less as the cutting eases. It is not a course you must finish, and not a substitute for a urine report. Fever, loin pain or vomiting ends the home experiment.

Cantharis 30 vs 200

Cantharis 200 is not a stronger Spanish fly. Chemically it is more dilute than 30C. Classically it is a single dose, then a wait. Daily 200C is a misuse. Repeat 30C only while the acute picture is present. See the potency guide.

Cantharis mother tincture (Q)

Cantharis Q is beetle extract in alcohol. It can contain cantharidin. It is not "Cantharis 30, only stronger." Do not copy 5–10 drop internet doses, paint it on burns or genitals, or put it in an eye. If that is the bottle you already have, put it down. See the side effects guide.

How to Take Cantharis

• Globules under the tongue; 30C liquid about 5 drops in water. Never postpone an antibiotic, a urine test or burn care to protect a 15–30 minute coffee-and-mint gap — that gap is custom, not proven.
• Coffee is a classical Cantharis aggravation. That is not a reason to stop a doctor's medicines.
• Children: Cantharis 30 only after a doctor has seen the child. Fever, vomiting, loin pain, or a child who cannot pass urine is paediatric, not Cantharis Q.
• Stop when the cutting eases. Still fierce at 48 hours, or any red flag below, needs examination — not a higher potency.

Cantharis Side Effects

Cantharis 30 and 200 cannot poison you as cantharidin, assuming the dilution was made properly. Cantharis Q can. Read the number on the label.

Allergic rash, face swelling or wheeze: stop and get help. Bloody urine after a tincture is poisoning until proven otherwise, not a "healing crisis."

"Even small doses of Cantharis can be toxic" is true of crude cantharidin and Q, not of a properly made 30C. "Cantharis strains the kidneys" in anyone with a past UTI mixes those two bottles. A 30C has no cantharidin to strain a kidney. An untreated UTI can.

Who Should Be Careful

• Fever, loin pain, vomiting, pregnancy, a catheter, diabetes, a transplant, or a first UTI in a man or a child: not a Cantharis self-care case.
• Large, deep, chemical or electrical burns; face, hands, feet or genitals; inhalation; babies and older adults: emergency care. Follow, not a globule chart.
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding: no safety studies. Avoid Q — crude cantharidin is a historic abortifacient and nephrotoxin, and the ethanol is unnecessary. UTI in pregnancy needs obstetric care the same day.
• Kidney disease: no Q, no low X. Never instead of treating infection.
• Already on antibiotics: finish the course. A 30C has nothing in it to clash with those tablets. The clash is the delay.

Cantharis cuts along the whole act of passing urine. Apis stings and puffs, hates heat, wants cold — also the closer skin cousin for a shiny hive, not a blistered scald. Sarsaparilla hurts most as the last drops pass. Do not stack all three because a chemist labelled them "urine infection." One picture, one remedy, plus a work-up if this might be bacteria.

When to See a Doctor

Cantharis does not replace a urine test, an antibiotic, a catheter check, or a burns unit.

• Fever, shaking chills, loin pain, nausea or vomiting — possible kidney infection.
• Blood in the urine, inability to pass urine, or pain that does not ease.
• Pregnancy, diabetes, transplant, stones, catheter, a first episode in a man, or any dysuria in a child.
• Symptoms that return as soon as antibiotics stop.
• Burns that are large, deep, chemical, electrical, or on face, hands, feet or genitals; any burn in a baby or older adult; smoke or shock.
• Swallowing Spanish fly, Cantharis Q, or a beetle "vitality" powder — take the bottle to emergency care.
