Hecla Lava 3X: Toothache, Jaw Swelling, Side Effects

Hecla lava (Hekla lava) is volcanic scoria from Mount Hekla in Iceland, triturated into a homeopathic and biochemic tablet. Boericke gives it for toothache with swelling about the jaws, gum abscess, exostoses and difficult teething. It is not a dental extraction, not an antibiotic for a facial abscess, and not a treatment for bone cancer — even though the 1901 book listed osteosarcoma as a traditional heading.

What Hecla lava is

The starting material is scoria from Hekla, not a plant. It is ground with lactose (trituration), then tableted. Silicon dioxide, calcium, aluminium, magnesium and iron oxides appear in geological analyses of volcanic ash. Those minerals in a 3X tablet are still a trituration, not a bone-building diet.

Boericke: marked action upon the jaws; exostosis, gum abscess, difficult teething; nodosities, caries of bone, osteitis, periostitis; osteosarcoma; bone necrosis; sinus after mastoid operation. Hering adds teeth sensitive to pressure, pain after extraction, maxillary enlargement, exostoses of tibia.

Two claims on Indian pages are wrong.

It is not a mother-tincture plant. Soaking ash in alcohol does not make Hecla Q. Anything sold as “Hecla lava Q” is the same class of mislabel as Graphites Q.

Osteosarcoma in Boericke is not a treatment claim. A growing hard swelling of the jaw, night pain, or a loose tooth in an adult needs imaging and a dental/oral-surgery opinion. Globules do not replace that.

What the evidence actually says

There is no reliable RCT that Hecla lava 3X drains a gum abscess, shrinks torus mandibularis, or treats osteomyelitis.

Toothache care that actually prevents sepsis is dentistry: pulp treatment, extraction, drainage, and antibiotics when spreading infection is present. See toothache.

What Hecla is classically used for

• Toothache with jaw swelling. Sensitive to pressure; neuralgia after extraction; gum abscess from a decayed tooth. Arrange the dentist the same day if the face is swelling.
• Difficult teething in the old rachitic picture. A febrile, not-feeding infant is still paediatrics.
• Bony lumps / exostoses. Traditional. A new lump on the tibia or jaw is orthopaedics/dental radiology, not a 3X course “to dissolve bone.”
• After mastoid surgery in Boericke. Mastoiditis is ENT. Do not sit on a discharging ear and fever with volcanic ash tablets.

Compare Silicea (slow pus, splinters), Hepar sulph (splinter-pain abscess, chilly), [Mercurius] for offensive oral pus (not a page we have yet — send to a dentist).

How to take Hecla lava 3X

Indian biochemic habit: 3–4 tablets, two or three times a day, dissolved in the mouth, for a few days, alongside a dental appointment — not instead of one.

• Stop if swelling, fever or trismus (cannot open the mouth) appears or worsens.
• Lactose cautions as for other tissue salts: side-effects, tissue salts guide.

When to see a dentist or emergency care

• facial swelling, fever, difficulty opening the mouth or swallowing
• swelling under the tongue or of the neck — airway risk (108 / 112)
• trauma to the jaw, numbness of the lip, a tooth knocked out
• a lump that grows, ulcerates, or bleeds
• teething with dehydration, a non-blanching rash, or a floppy infant
