Homeopathic medicine for knee pain is chosen on what the joint wants — Rhus tox when it is stiff then eases on motion, Bryonia when every step is worse — not as a proven cartilage-regenerating drug. Osteoarthritis care that has evidence is exercise, weight if you carry extra, topical NSAIDs, and a look for a hot joint that is septic or crystal. A 30C does not replace that.

People search how to treat knee pain with homeopathy because stairs have become a negotiation. The useful part of the tradition is the modality. The useless part is a promise that Rhus tox regrows meniscus or treats a locked knee.
This page is for adults with mechanical, gradual knee pain who want the classical names explained. It is not a protocol for a hot swollen knee, a sports lock, or rheumatoid disease.
The knee is cartilage, two menisci, ligaments, tendon, bone and a lining. Pain comes from osteoarthritis, a twist, overload, gout, rheumatoid disease, or — rarely — infection.
Rheumatology guidance agrees on the unromantic list: strengthen and move, lose weight if BMI says so, topical anti-inflammatories, sometimes oral NSAIDs or an injection, sometimes an osteotomy or replacement. Glucosamine evidence is weak. “Cartilage repair drops” are a shop category.
A hot, red, feverish knee is septic arthritis until proven otherwise — an emergency tap, not Rhus. A knee that locks after a twist is a meniscus or loose body until an examination says it is not. Night pain with weight loss is not “old age.”
See also osteoarthritis and gout.
There is no reliable trial showing that Rhus tox, Bryonia or Calcarea fluorica rebuilds cartilage or delays a replacement.
Calcarea fluorica 6X is a tissue salt, not a fluoride bone drug. Rhus tox 30C is empty of urushiol; the crude plant is poison ivy.
Everything in the table is classical indication.
| Picture | Classical names | Not the same as |
|---|---|---|
| Stiff on rising, better once moving, worse sitting still | Rhus toxicodendron | A septic knee that also hates stillness |
| Worse every motion, wants to lie perfectly still | Bryonia | A locked knee after trauma |
| Worse first motion, better warmth, chronic wear | Rhus, Calc fluor as a tissue-salt habit | Imaging if the story is new |
| Burning, restlessness, after injury | Arnica in the old first-aid lists | A fracture or ligament tear — do not walk it off |
| Hot, swollen, exquisite, after rich food | Colchicum, Benzoic acid stories | A uric-acid diagnosis and, in a flare, colchicine / NSAID / steroid as indicated |
| Many joints, morning stiffness an hour | Not a first-homeopathy problem | Rheumatoid work-up |
If you use a 30C for a known, cold, mechanical knee, it is 3–5 globules once or twice a day for a few days of a flare, then stop. It is not a three-year “cartilage course.”
If the knee gives way on stairs, get the ligament examined before you “strengthen through it.”
30C cannot dissolve cartilage. The harms are walking on a fracture, missing a septic joint, and NSAID stomach or kidney injury from the gel-or-tablet you added — that last one is the NSAID, not the pellet.
Do not sit on Rhus tox 30 if you notice:
