Carduus Marianus Q Uses: Liver, Dose, Silymarin Limits
Carduus marianus is milk thistle (Silybum marianum). Homeopaths classically give the tincture for a sore, congested liver, left lobe sensitive, bright-yellow stools or jaundice pictures, portal fullness, and a history of beer. The mother tincture is a seed extract. It is not a proven cirrhosis reverse, not a hepatitis C drug, and not a hangover shield. Silymarin capsules and Carduus Q are not interchangeable medicines.

This article is for people holding Carduus marianus Q, or searching carduus marianus uses. It is not a protocol for acute liver failure, biliary colic with fever, or a yellow newborn.

What Carduus is — and what it is not
Milk thistle is a purple-flowered thistle with milky veins on the leaves. Boericke centres it on the liver and portal system: soreness, pain, jaundice; abuse of alcoholic drinks, especially beer; varicose veins; dropsy depending on liver disease; left lobe very sensitive; gall-stone disease with enlarged liver; hyperaemia with jaundice; cirrhosis with dropsy.
Those last lines are why this page has to be strict. Cirrhosis with ascites is hepatology. Carduus Q is not albumin, not a beta-blocker for varices, and not a transplant listing.
(updated February 2025) is about dietary silymarin extracts, not 30C:
- not enough high-quality evidence for definite conclusions
- a randomised trial of higher-than-usual silymarin doses in interferon-experienced hepatitis C: no better than placebo on ALT or HCV RNA
- oral milk thistle is usually tolerated; gut symptoms; ragweed-family allergy; product quality varies; pregnancy data insufficient
Even standardized silymarin failed those endpoints. A few drops of homeopathic Q contain far less, or — in a 30C — none.
It is not a liver “detox,” not a substitute for stopping alcohol, and not a treatment for fatty liver that replaces weight change. See fatty liver and liver cirrhosis.
What the evidence actually says (homeopathy plus herb)
Homeopathy as a system:;.
Do not paste a silymarin capsule RCT onto a 30C globule, and do not paste a failed RCT onto “Q will work if the capsule did not.”
What Carduus is classically used for
- Liver region pain, left lobe tender, fullness, moist skin, bitter taste, bright yellow stools. Compare Chelidonium (right scapula, yellow tongue, clay stools).
- Jaundice pictures in the old books. New jaundice in an adult is still conjugated-bilirubin until a lab says otherwise — obstruction, hepatitis, haemolysis. Pale stools and dark urine with fever is same-day.
- Beer and portal fullness. Tradition. Alcohol-related liver disease needs abstinence and a physician, not a thistle dropper.
- Gall-bladder tenderness. Colic with fever or jaundice is stones until proven otherwise — gallbladder.
- Varices / haemorrhages with hepatic disease in Boericke. Variceal bleed is 108, not Carduus.
Carduus Q vs 30 vs silymarin capsules
| Form |
What is in it |
Honest use |
Supervision |
| Silymarin capsule (herbal supplement) |
Milligrams of extract |
evidence insufficient; hep C / NASH RCTs negative |
Tell the hepatologist; allergy; quality |
| Carduus Q |
Alcohol + some seed constituents |
Classical liver picture only |
Prescriber; never in confusion/jaundice emergency |
| 30C |
No silymarin |
Picture matching |
Mild adjunct at most |
Retail “10–20 drops thrice daily for liver cleanse” is shop language. If Q is used at all, short course, known alcohol load, stop date.
How to take it — and what to do first
- If you drink daily, the medicine that changes the liver is stopping alcohol.
- If ALT/AST are high, repeat with a physician; look at medicines, viral serology, ultrasound — not a detox kit.
- Then, if someone still wants a classical match: Q only with eyes open; 30C if they insist on globules.
See potency and mother tinctures.
Side effects — what is real
| What people fear |
What is actually true |
| Silymarin liver rescue from Q |
Not shown; major silymarin trials disappointed |
| Allergy |
Real for Asteraceae (ragweed, chrysanthemum, daisy) with material extracts |
| Alcohol in Q |
Real in liver disease — ironic and important |
| Drug interactions |
Possible with herbal milk thistle; tell the prescriber; 30C has none plausible |
When to see a doctor
- yellow eyes or skin, pale stools, dark urine
- swelling of the legs or belly, vomiting blood, black stools
- confusion, sleep–wake reversal (encephalopathy)
- right-upper-quadrant pain with fever or rigors
- pregnancy and itch or jaundice
- paracetamol overdose — emergency, not thistle
Kanpur clinic. Bring the LFT printout. We will not promise to reverse cirrhosis.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Carduus marianus Q used for?
Classically, a sore congested liver picture, jaundice-type stools, beer history, left-lobe tenderness. Tradition. Not a cirrhosis drug.
Does milk thistle cure fatty liver or hepatitis C?
Homeopathic Q is not a better-studied version of those capsules.
What is the dose of Carduus Q?
Shop copy is often 10 drops in water two or three times daily. That is not a trial dose. Q is alcohol. Do not use it as a cleanse. Stop for jaundice or confusion.
Carduus Q vs 30C?
Q is a seed tincture. 30C has no silymarin. Q is not stronger 30 in the homeopathic sense; it is a different product.
Can I take Carduus with liver tablets from a gastroenterologist?
Tell them. Do not stop antivirals, diuretics or beta-blockers. 30C has no plausible interaction; Q is an herb-plus-alcohol.
Is Carduus safe in pregnancy?
Do not self-start Q.
Carduus vs Chelidonium for jaundice?
Chelidonium: right scapula, clay stools, yellow tongue. Carduus: portal/liver soreness, beer, left lobe. New jaundice still needs labs.
Can Carduus treat gallstones?
Boericke mentions gallstone disease with enlarged liver. A stone in the CBD is ERCP territory, not drops.
Side effects of Carduus Q?
Alcohol, bloating or loose stool, Asteraceae allergy, and delay of real hepatology.
How long does Carduus take to work?
No evidence-based window. Rising bilirubin or INR is not a “give it six weeks” problem.
Does Carduus help varicose veins?
Boericke links varices to portal pictures. Vein disease still follows compression and vascular assessment — [varicose veins](/blog/how-to-treat-varicose-veins-with-homeopathy).
Why not a liver detox?
The liver is the detox organ. Thistle drops do not empty it. Stopping alcohol, checking viruses and medicines, and treating ascites save lives.
