Graphites 30 & 200: Sticky Eczema, Dosage, Side Effects

Graphites 30 is the usual home potency of Hahnemann's carbon, prepared from graphite (plumbago). Homeopaths classically give it for sticky, honey-like eczema in folds, cracks behind the ears, constipation with large knotty stools, delayed scanty menses, and thick scars — in a chilly, overweight, indecisive person. It is not a proven cure for atopic dermatitis. Emollients, trigger avoidance and medical care still come first.

What Is Graphites?

Graphites is the homeopathic preparation of graphite, the same carbon mineral once sold as plumbago or black lead. Pharmacies label the bottle Graphites, Graphite, Graphites 30, Graphites 200, Graphites 30CH or Graph. They all mean this medicine.

You do not swallow crude graphite. The mineral is insoluble, so the pharmacopoeial method is trituration: the powder is ground with lactose through the early decimal and centesimal steps, then converted to liquid dilutions and medicated onto globules or tablets. That is why a 6X tablet is mostly milk sugar with a trace of carbon, and a 30C globule holds none of the starting mineral.

Two claims you will still find on Indian product pages are wrong.

It is not an electrical medicine. Graphite's hexagonal carbon lattice, conductivity and industrial uses (pencils, lubricants, electrodes) do not explain what a 30C does. Trace iron, silicon or sulphur in mined graphite are impurities of a rock, not "electrical imbalances" in your skin. Crude graphite is not taken; trituration then dilution is.

It is not a mother-tincture plant. Soaking powdered graphite in alcohol does not make a pharmacopoeial Q. Graphite does not dissolve. Anything sold as "Graphites Q" is mislabelled in the same way as a bottle sold as Hepar Sulph Q. Use the trituration or the numbered potency, not a homemade alcoholic soak.

Homeopaths pick Graphites when the discharge, the site and the person match Boericke, not when a lab form says eczema.

• Cracks. Boericke records moist splits at the mouth corners, eyelids, anus, between the toes, and cracked nipples — not a clean dry chap.
• Constipation with large stools. Allen's keynote: habitual constipation in someone inclined to obesity; stools large, knotty, sometimes strung by mucus threads. See constipation.
• Delayed, scanty menses. First periods late; later cycles pale and delayed, in a chilly person putting on weight. Rule out pregnancy, thyroid disease and PCOS before anyone treats a "Graphites period."
• Thick scars. Old cuts that thicken, itch and stay sensitive. That is not surgery for a growing keloid.
• Mind. Timid, irresolute; music makes her weep. Indecision, not rage.

Graphites is not a lubricant for joints, a wart paint, an asthma syrup or a psoriasis cure because industrial graphite is slippery. Those lines are chemistry pasted onto a label.

What the Evidence Says

There is no randomised trial that isolates Graphites 30 or Graphites 200 for atopic dermatitis, constipation or delayed menses. The uses above are classical indications from Hahnemann, Boericke, Clarke and Allen — nineteenth-century provings and clinical notes — not effects shown against placebo.

Infected or severe disease needs a doctor. Graphites does not replace that.

Nothing about the chemistry of graphite explains a 30C. From about 12C (or 24X) you are past Avogadro's number: most bottles contain no molecule of the starting carbon.

Graphites 30 uses

Graphites 30 (30CH) is the bottle most Indian chemists dispense. Use it when the sticky-ooze picture is already visible, not for "a bit of dryness." Typical adult direction: 4–5 globules once or twice a day, stop when itch and ooze ease. Keep the emollient your doctor advised. If nothing has shifted in one to two weeks, the remedy is probably wrong — do not raise it to 200 yourself.

Graphites 200 uses

Graphites 200 is not a stronger 30. Chemically it is more dilute. Classically it is a single dose for a long chilly, constipated, sticky-fold case, then a wait. Daily 200C is not self-care.

Low triturations (6X) still hold a trace of carbon plus a lot of lactose, closer to a biochemic tissue salt than to a 200C. That matters if you are lactose intolerant. It is not a carbon supplement.

There is no Graphites Q. Graphite is insoluble; mother tincture means an alcoholic extract of a soluble crude drug. A bottle labelled Graphites Q should be put down.

How to Take Graphites

• Clean mouth; globules under the tongue. The 15–30 minute food gap is custom, not proven — never delay a prescribed steroid or laxative for it.
• Liquid 30C: about 5 drops in a teaspoon of water. Do not handle globules with wet fingers.
• Children: a registered homeopath may use Graphites 30 for fold eczema after a doctor has seen raw, infected or widespread disease. No alcoholic drops in an infant's mouth.
• Stop when improvement holds. Daily Graphites 30 "for skin" for months is how a wrong remedy hides.

Graphites Side Effects

From about 12C upward Graphites cannot poison you as carbon. What people notice is the sugar or alcohol base, a brief extra itch, or time lost while infected eczema goes untreated. Side effects follow the number on the label; so does potency.

Graphites 30 does not interact with blood thinners, diuretics or "electrical" medicines. A 30C has nothing in it to interact with. The old warning was copied from herbal-supplement templates.

Who Should Be Careful

• Pregnancy and breastfeeding: no safety studies. Infected nipple cracks and delayed menses still need a clinician who knows you are pregnant.
• Infants: a doctor should see weeping, crusted, feverish or widespread eczema first. No alcoholic drops in a baby's mouth.
• Lactose intolerance or galactosaemia: tablets are mostly milk sugar.
• Already on topical steroids: keep using them.

Graphites vs Petroleum

Both cover cracked, unhappy skin. Graphites oozes sticky honey-coloured fluid in folds and behind the ears. Petroleum is the winter remedy: dry, deep, bleeding cracks, thinner watery discharge. Winter hands that barely ooze point to Petroleum; a neck crease that weeps gluey fluid in any season points to Graphites.

Graphites vs Sulphur

Temperature and the bath separate them. Sulphur is hot, itchy, worse from warmth and washing. Graphites is chilly, sticky rather than burning, and constipated with large stools.

When to See a Doctor

Homeopathy does not replace emollients, infection control or, when needed, dermatology.

• Rapidly spreading redness, yellow crusts, fever, or a painful hot swelling.
• A baby or child who cannot sleep, is not feeding, or has raw skin over a large area.
• Face, lip or tongue swelling, or trouble breathing.
• Constipation with vomiting, severe pain, or blood in the stool.
• A scar that is growing, ulcerating or changing.
