Natrum muriaticum is sodium chloride — table salt — used as a tissue salt and a constitutional remedy. The classical picture is a hammering headache, often from sunrise to sunset, after grief, sun or eyestrain, in someone who wants to be left alone and craves salt. A 6X tablet is nanograms of salt, not a sodium meal and not a migraine protocol.

This article is for people holding an SBL or Schwabe Nat mur 6X / 30 / 200 bottle, or searching natrum muriaticum uses. It is not a protocol for migraine with aura, hyponatraemia, or major depression.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Full name | Natrum muriaticum (sodium chloride) |
| Also written | Nat mur, Nat. mur., Natrium muriaticum, tissue salt no. 9 |
| Source | Common salt, triturated with lactose |
| Common Indian forms | Biochemic 6X tablets; globules 30C, 200C, 1M |
| Mother tincture (Q) | Not a plant; made by trituration. A “Nat mur Q” bottle is a mislabel |
| Main classical uses | Hammer headaches, closed grief, cold sores, salt craving |
| Keynote | Consolation aggravates; headache like little hammers; worse sun |
| Usual home potency | 6X as a tissue salt; 30C for the acute picture |
| Safety in one line | 6X cannot raise or lower body sodium; a thunderclap headache is an emergency |
Schüssler numbered sodium chloride tissue salt 9. Boericke’s monograph is larger: grief that is silent, headaches that feel like a thousand little hammers, mapped from sunrise to sunset, school-girl anaemia-headache, cold sores, a mapped tongue, craving salt, aversion to consolation.
Indian chemists sell Nat mur 6X for “colds and headaches” and Nat mur 30 for the constitutional picture. They are different dilutions of the same salt.
It is not an ORS sachet, not Slow-Sodium, and not a reason to add or ban table salt in heart failure. The arithmetic is the same family as Ferrum phos 6X: a 6X tablet holds about 60 nanograms of salt in a 60 mg lactose tablet. One pinch of dinner salt dwarfs the bottle.
There is no reliable randomised trial showing that Natrum mur 6X or 30C prevents migraine, treats grief, shortens a cold sore, or corrects sodium.
Labels market temporary relief of headaches, heartburn and gastric upset, and print the required line: traditional homeopathic practice, not accepted medical evidence, not FDA evaluated.
Everything below is classical indication, not a trial result.
Hammer headaches. Morning, after menses, from sunrise to sunset, after eyestrain, worse sun, better sleep. Numb lips before the pain — an old aura-like line. A first thunderclap, a headache with fever and stiff neck, or a headache after trauma is not this paragraph.
Closed grief. Wants to cry alone; consolation worsens; dwells on old slights. Compare Ignatia (acute, spasmodic) and Acidum phos (flat, indifferent). Depression with hopelessness is psychiatry, not 6X. KIRAN: 1800-599-0019.
Cold sores and mapped lips. Herpes labialis sits in the old keynotes. Antivirals exist for frequent, severe, or immunocompromised outbreaks. Nat mur 30 does not replace them.
Salt craving and “dry membranes.” A craving is a keynote, not a sodium panel. Heart-failure salt limits still come from the cardiologist.
What it is not for: a sodium supplement, a hyponatraemia treatment, a thyroid drug (Boericke mentions goitre — ignore that as endocrinology), or Addison’s disease.
| Potency | What is in it | Classically chosen for | How it is usually taken | Supervision |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6X | ~60 ng salt + lactose | Tissue-salt / label headaches | 4 tablets, 3–4 times daily, few days | Self-care for mild, known headaches |
| 30C | No measurable salt | Acute picture / first constitutional | 3–5 globules, 1–3 times daily, then stop | Advisable if headaches are new |
| 200C / 1M | Empty | Constitutional grief / migraine pattern | Single dose, then wait | Registered homeopath |
6X is not dietary salt. 30 is not stronger 6X. 30C is more dilute on the centesimal scale.
Keep prescribed triptans, gepants, beta blockers or antidepressants. Nat mur does not replace them.
Two mix-ups.
A known migraine that matches the hammer-and-sun picture is the only setting where we still talk about Nat mur as a picture. A new severe headache is imaging and a physician.
6X cannot treat low sodium, high sodium, or heat stroke. ORS is grams of salt and glucose. This tablet is not.
| What people fear | What is actually true |
|---|---|
| Sodium overload from 6X | Not realistic at nanograms |
| “No side effects” | False. Lactose, delay, and missing a thunderclap all exist |
| Drug interaction at 30C | No plausible interaction from ~12C up |
Lactose. Biochemic tablets are mostly milk sugar. See the tissue salts guide and side effects.
| Remedy | Picture | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| Natrum mur | Hammer headache, closed grief, sun, salt | Consolation worse |
| Ignatia | Acute grief, lump in throat | After a shock |
| Sepia | Indifferent, pelvic drag | Worn gynaecological picture |
| Belladonna | Sudden, throbbing, hot, staring | High fever headache |
| Nux vomica | After food, alcohol, night work | Spasmodic, irritable |
