Equisetum Hyemale 30: Bladder Urging, Dose, Q Risk

Homeopaths classically give it for constant bladder fullness, urging that produces only a few drops, pain not better after passing urine, and some bedwetting pictures. A properly made 30C is empty of plant. Horsetail tea, capsules and mother tincture (Q) are material herbal products with a different safety file. Equisetum is not an antibiotic. Burning urine with fever still needs a sample.

Equisetum at a glance

Rough horsetail is a jointed, silica-rich rush of wet ground. The stems were once used as pot-scourers. In homeopathy the fresh plant is tinctured, then diluted. It is not a culture-guided antibiotic, a prostate operation, or a calcium-silica bone tonic. The old page listed infusions, decoctions, poultices and “prevents bone loss.” That is herbal folklore mixed with a 30C search. Field horsetail also contains thiaminase, which can destroy vitamin B1 with heavy plant intake (well described in livestock hay contamination). Alcohol tinctures are a different matrix from tea; do not assume Q is “safe because it is natural.”

The for E. arvense is traditional use as a urinary flushing adjunct in minor complaints — and it contraindicates use when fluid intake must be restricted (severe heart or kidney disease). That is tea and extract, not 30C, and it is not a licence to skip a urine test.

What the evidence actually says

There is no reliable trial that Equisetum 30 treats UTI, interstitial cystitis, prostate enlargement, kidney stones or bedwetting.

Antibiotics treat bacterial UTIs; a clinician decides if you have one and which drug.

If the search is equisetum for UTI, the medical sequence is: symptoms → urine test when indicated → antibiotic if bacterial cystitis → fluids. A globule does not sterilise E. coli. Delay with fever, loin pain or vomiting is how a bladder infection becomes a kidney one. See urine infection.

What Equisetum 30 is classically used for

The picture is irritation and fullness with little to show for it.

Bladder. Constant urging; only a few drops; the pain and fullness continue after passing urine (the opposite of the relief most people expect). Cutting in the urethra. Tenderness over the bladder. This is a sensory picture, not a proven treatment for culture-positive cystitis.

Enuresis. Classical use in children who wet the bed and dream they are on the toilet. First exclude constipation, threadworms, diabetes, a UTI, and sleep apnoea. Shame is not a prescription. Cina is a worm picture, not a bladder drug.

Compare Cantharis. Cantharis is violent burning, intolerable urging, and often blood. Equisetum is dull distension that urination does not empty. Neither replaces a dipstick when infection is likely.

Not for. Kidney stones that need imaging, overflow from a blocked prostate, a silent belly, or a three-month-old with fever 38°C — that last one is same-day paediatrics.

Equisetum 30 vs Q vs herbal tea

Do not “flush the kidneys” with Q while taking a diuretic, an ACE inhibitor, or lithium. That is herbal–drug geography, not globule geography.

How to take Equisetum 30

• Clean mouth, 15–30 minutes from food, mint and coffee.
• Dissolve globules; do not handle them with wet fingers.
• Matching acute picture: a few globules, perhaps repeated the same day, then stop.
• If burning, fever or blood appears, stop and get a urine test. Do not climb potency at home.
• Children with new bedwetting: examine first. Do not start nightly Equisetum for months.
• Pregnancy: skip Q and herbal horsetail. 30C is chemically empty but unstudied; UTI in pregnancy is a urine culture, not a rush.

Side effects — plant and pellet are different

Q, tea, capsules. GI upset; theoretical B1 depletion with heavy crude plant; caution in liver disease; extra fluid load is unsafe in severe cardiac or renal disease. Stop and seek care for rash, yellowing, or collapse.
