Hypericum 30 Uses: Nerve Injury, Not St John's Wort

Hypericum perforatum 30 is the usual home potency of St John's wort. Homeopaths classically give it for injuries to nerve-rich parts — crushed fingertips, coccyx, dental nerves — with shooting pain. A properly made 30C contains no measurable hyperforin. Herbal St John's wort is a different product: documents dangerous interactions with contraceptives, transplant, HIV, cancer, seizure and heart medicines, and serotonin toxicity with antidepressants. Hypericum 30 is not an SSRI and not proven neuropathy treatment.

What Hypericum is — and what it is not

Homeopathic Hypericum (Boericke): injuries of parts rich in sentient nerves; crushed fingers, toes, nails; punctured wounds; coccyx after a fall; pain shoots up the limb; spinal concussion as a picture; dental nerve pain after extraction in the old notes. Compare Ledum (cold puncture) and Arnica (bruised muscle).

Herbal St John's wort is a standardised extract (often discussed around 0.3% hypericin / several percent hyperforin) studied for mild to moderate depression with mixed results and clear interaction risk. That evidence does not transfer to 30C globules, which should contain none of those molecules.

It is not:

• sertraline, fluoxetine, or any licensed antidepressant
• a diabetic-neuropathy drug
• a shingles antiviral
• a cancer preventive (the old page claimed this — we are not repeating it)
• tetanus care after a crush

What the evidence actually says

There is no robust RCT showing Hypericum 30 heals nerve lacerations, prevents post-herpetic neuralgia, or treats trigeminal neuralgia better than placebo.

: the herb weakens cyclosporine, some HIV drugs (e.g. indinavir), some cancer drugs (irinotecan, imatinib), digoxin, some anticonvulsants, and oral contraceptives; with SSRIs it may contribute to serotonin syndrome. Photosensitivity occurs with the herb.

A crushed fingertip still needs washing, tetanus status, and a hand surgeon if the nail bed is split or the finger is ischaemic. See.

What Hypericum 30 is classically used for

• Crushed fingers and toes. Door, hammer, nail — pain shoots up. First aid and imaging still first.
• Coccyx and tailbone after a fall on ice. Rule out fracture if you cannot sit.
• Punctures in nerve-rich sites after cleaning. Ledum if the part is cold; Hypericum if it shoots.
• After dental work when the nerve was mauled, as a picture — not an antibiotic for an abscess. See toothache.
• Sciatica picture with shooting, spine-related pain. Still a disc/cauda equina screen. See sciatica.
• Not depression. If you want evidence-grade St John's wort, that is a pharmacist and prescriber conversation about the herb, not 30C, and often the answer is “do not combine with your other drugs.” See anxiety for the limits of globules in mood care.

Hypericum 30 vs 200 vs Q vs 300 mg extract

If your blister pack says 300 mg or 0.3% hypericin, you are not holding Hypericum 30.

How to take Hypericum 30

• Wash the crush. Check tetanus. Then, if the shooting picture fits, 4–5 globules.
• Stop when the neuralgic edge eases. Daily 30C for “nerves” for months hides a disc.
• Do not start herbal St John's wort because this page mentioned Hypericum.
• Pregnancy: skip the herb (interaction and data gaps). 30C is empty of hyperforin if made properly; a crushed finger in pregnancy still needs a clinician.

Side effects — two products, two risk lists

30C / 200C. Sugar or alcohol vehicle; delay of hand surgery is the harm. Side effects. A true 30C should not induce CYP3A4.

Herb / Q / oil. Breakthrough bleeding on the pill, transplant rejection, antiretroviral failure, photosensitivity, serotonin toxicity with antidepressants.

When to see a doctor

• white, cold, pulseless finger after a crush
• nail-bed laceration, open fracture, or bite
• saddle anaesthesia, incontinence, or bilateral leg weakness after a coccyx fall
• depression with suicidal thoughts — crisis care, not wort and not 30C
• you already take transplant, HIV, cancer, seizure, warfarin or contraceptive drugs — do not add the herb
• shingles on the face (eye risk) — antivirals have a time window
