Ruta 30 Uses: Sprains, Tendons, Eye Strain, Side Effects
Ruta graveolens 30 is the usual home potency of garden rue (Ruta graveolens). Homeopaths classically give it for strained tendons, bruised periosteum, stiff wrists and ankles after overuse, and eye strain from close work. A properly made 30C contains no measurable rue oil. Fresh plant, tea, oil and mother tincture (Q) are phototoxic and abortifacient. Ruta is not proven physiotherapy for a sprain.

This article is for people searching ruta graveolens 30 uses, Ruta for tennis elbow, or rue tea for joints. It is not a protocol for a torn ligament, a red-hot joint, or drinking rue to bring on a period.

| Main classical uses |
Tendons, periosteum, wrists/ankles, eye strain from fine work |
| Usual home potency |
30C, a few globules after rest and support, then stop |
| Safety in one line |
Globules ≠ rue tea. Do not use rue as a home abortifacient |
What Ruta is — and what it is not
Rue is a small Mediterranean shrub with a bitter, metallic smell. Boericke’s keynotes sit in fibrous tissues and periosteum: bruised bone, tendons that feel strained after a sprain has “healed,” wrists and ankles that give out, eyes that burn after sewing or screens. He also lists a rectum that protrudes with every stool and pain in the eyes as if strained.
Clarke puts Ruta after Rhus when restlessness is less and the periosteum is more. Nash stresses bruised lameness as if the bones were beaten.
It is not:
- a proven anti-inflammatory for tennis elbow or carpal tunnel
- a reason to skip imaging for a wrist that cannot take weight
- rue tea, rue oil, or a DIY abortifacient — the herb has a long emmenagogue/abortifacient history and can blister skin in sun
- an eye drop (the plant can injure the cornea)
What the evidence actually says
There is no reliable randomised trial showing that Ruta 30 shortens sprain recovery, heals tendons, or treats glaucoma.
For a sprain, still centres protection, rest as needed, ice, compression, elevation, and a clinician if you cannot bear weight or the joint looks deformed. Ruta globules do not change that algorithm.
Everything below is classical indication.
What Ruta is classically used for
- Tendons and periosteum. A sprain that “should have settled” still feels bruised at the bone; tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, Achilles overuse, wrist from a mouse. Compare Rhus tox (restless, better continued motion) and Arnica (soft-tissue bruise, afraid of touch).
- Wrists, ankles, knees. Stiff after sitting; cracking; a feeling the joint will give way. That is not an ACL reconstruction.
- Eye strain. Burning, aching globes after close work, as if the eyes were strained in their sockets. Get a refraction if this is new. It is not a glaucoma drop.
- Bruised bone. After a blow on the shin or iliac crest when Arnica’s muscle soreness has faded but the bone still complains. Symphytum is the deeper “bone-break” picture.
- Rectum. Boericke: protrusion with stool; a bruised rectum after labour. See a clinician for bleeding or a new lump — not a rue pellet as piles surgery.

How to take Ruta 30
- Clean mouth; dissolve globules. The 15–30 minute food gap is custom, not proven.
- Matching overuse picture: 4–5 globules once or twice, then stop when the bruise-in-the-tendon eases.
- Keep the brace, load management and physio your clinician advised. See back pain and heel pain if that is the real site.
- Pregnancy: skip tea, oil and Q entirely. 30C is chemically empty if made properly, but unstudied; vaginal bleeding is obstetric care, not rue.
- Do not put rue juice in the eye.
Side effects — herb and globule are different worlds
30C / 200C. Vehicle only (lactose, sucrose, or a little alcohol). Possible brief extra ache. Delay of a fracture or tendon rupture is the real harm. See homeopathy side effects and potency.
Tea / oil / Q / fresh plant. Nausea, cramping, phototoxic blisters, uterine cramping, miscarriage risk in traditional toxicology, kidney irritation in overdose. 108 / 112 if someone swallowed a handful of rue or is bleeding in pregnancy after rue.

When to see a doctor
- cannot bear weight, the joint looks wrong, or numbness follows a fall
- calf pain and swelling after an Achilles strain (rule out rupture)
- eye pain with halos, vomiting, or sudden vision loss
- a child who will not use an arm after a yank (pulled elbow)
- pregnancy bleeding after any rue product
- phototoxic blisters after handling the plant
WeClinic Homeopathy in Kanpur and Noida will ask about imaging and load before arguing globules. Packages: Kanpur clinic page. Bring the scan if you have one.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Ruta graveolens 30 used for?
Classically, strained tendons, bruised periosteum, weak wrists and ankles after overuse, and eye strain from close work. That is Boericke. It is not a proven sprain drug and not rue tea.
Is Ruta tea or Q stronger than Ruta 30?
Stronger as **poison**, not as a 30C. Tea, oil and mother tincture contain the plant. A properly made 30C does not. Do not drink rue to “boost” a globule.
What is the dose of Ruta 30 for tennis elbow?
A few globules once or twice when the periosteal picture is clear, then stop. Keep rest, a counterforce strap and a clinician’s plan. Daily Ruta for months is not self-care.
Can pregnant women take Ruta?
Skip the herb, oil and Q — rue is a traditional abortifacient and phototoxin. 30C is empty of rue oil if made properly, but unstudied. Bleeding in pregnancy is not a Ruta case.
Ruta vs Rhus tox for a sprain?
Rhus is restless, worse starting, better once moving. Ruta is bruised tendon and bone, less of the “must fidget” keynote. Neither replaces an X-ray when you cannot walk.
Does Ruta help computer eye strain?
Classically, yes — eyes ache as if strained in their sockets. Get glasses checked. Sudden visual loss is emergency care.
Can I put Ruta mother tincture on a sprain?
Do not improvise rue liniment in the sun. Phototoxic burns are documented with the plant. Support and ice as advised beat a photosensitising weed.
Is Ruta safe for children?
30C has no realistic rue oil if made properly. A child who will not use a limb still needs a doctor. No alcoholic Q in a child’s mouth.
How long does Ruta take to work?
There is no evidence-based window. If swelling, heat or inability to load lasts beyond a couple of days, you need examination, not 200C.
Can Ruta treat arthritis?
Overuse periosteum is a picture, not a rheumatoid or gout diagnosis. See [osteoarthritis](/blog/how-to-treat-osteoarthritis-with-homeopathy) and [gout](/blog/how-to-treat-gout-with-homeopathy) if that is the disease.
Does Ruta 30 interact with blood thinners?
A true 30C has nothing in it to interact with. The herb is a different product. Do not stop prescribed medicine for globules.
Can I take Ruta daily for eye strain?
No as a standing order. Fix lighting, breaks and refraction. Repeat 30C only if the classical picture returns, then stop again.
