Ledum 30 Uses: Insect Bites, Punctures, Side Effects
Ledum palustre 30 is the usual home potency of marsh tea (Rhododendron tomentosum, once Ledum palustre). Homeopaths classically give it for puncture wounds and insect bites that feel cold, pale or mottled, better from cold applications, and for rheumatism that starts in the feet and travels up. A properly made 30C contains no measurable ledol. The plant tea and mother tincture are not first aid. Ice is not a tetanus booster.

This article is for people searching ledum palustre 30 uses, mosquito-bite globules, or Ledum after a nail puncture. It is not a substitute for washing the wound, tetanus vaccination, or emergency care for anaphylaxis.

What Ledum is — and what it is not
Ledum is a low evergreen of northern bogs. Boericke’s keynotes are a lack of animal heat with heat of the bed intolerable, rheumatism that begins in the feet and travels upward, and punctured wounds from nails, needles, thorns or bites — especially if the part is cold. He also lists it as traditional for insect stings and as an old antidote idea for poison-oak pictures.
Clarke adds long-lasting discoloration after bruises and the “black eye” from a blow (Nash’s Ledum 200 line). Boiron-style summer pages sell it as a mosquito globule. That is marketing of a picture, not a trial.
It is not:
- tetanus immunoglobulin or a Td/Tdap booster — still governs punctures
- adrenaline for anaphylaxis
- an antibiotic for a dirty wound
- a gout cure because the pain “starts in the feet”
- a safe wild tea — ledol toxicity is why internal herbal Ledum fell out of fashion
What the evidence actually says
There is no reliable randomised trial showing that Ledum 30 prevents tetanus, shortens cellulitis, or treats rheumatoid arthritis. The
The is blunt: tetanus bacteria enter through broken skin, especially deep or dirty wounds. Prevention is vaccination plus wound care. Antibiotics are not used to prevent tetanus. A globule is not on that algorithm.
Everything below is classical indication.
What Ledum is classically used for
- Puncture wounds. Nail, splinter, needle, thorn, animal bite — the part is cold, pale or bluish, not hot and throbbing. Better putting the part in cold water. That is the Ledum modality. Wash soap-and-water first. Remove debris. Then argue about globules.
- Insect bites and stings. Mosquito, wasp, bee — swollen, coldish, itching, wants cold. Not a substitute for an adrenaline pen if the throat is closing.
- Bruises that stay discoloured. Clarke: ecchymoses last; Nash: black eye from a blow. Compare Arnica (sore, bruised, afraid of touch) and Hamamelis (sore, venous, bruised veins).
- Rheumatism from below upward. Feet and ankles first, then knees; chilly person who still throws the covers because the bed is too hot. This is not a uric-acid blood test. See gout and osteoarthritis if that is the real disease.
- Tetanus in the old books. Boericke records twitching near a puncture. That is a 19th-century keynote. Lockjaw is an ICU problem.

Cold applications are part of the picture, not a dosing instruction to ice a puncture until it is numb. Do not pack ice on a wound you have not cleaned.
Puncture wounds: do this before the bottle
groups punctures with dirty/major wounds.
- Wash with soap and water. Remove dirt.
- See a clinician if it is deep, from a nail, contains soil or saliva, or you cannot see the bottom.
- Tetanus vaccine: if the primary series is complete, a booster is due at ≥5 years for dirty/major wounds and ≥10 years for clean minor wounds. Unknown history needs vaccine ± TIG.
- Watch for spreading redness, fever, pus, or inability to open the mouth.
Ledum 30 does not change any of those four steps. Our side-effects article covers delay as the real harm.
Side effects — what is real
| What people fear |
What is actually true |
| Ledol poisoning from 30C |
Not realistic if the globule is a true 30C |
| Herbal tea / Q |
Material plant — not a home experiment |
| “It prevents tetanus” |
False. Vaccination and wound care prevent tetanus |
| Allergy to Ericaceae |
Possible with material extracts; 30C is empty of plant oil |
Pets. Some home sites sell Ledum for animals. A puncture in a dog still needs a vet. Do not use human Q in a pet.

When to see a doctor
- nail or dirty puncture, especially through a shoe
- animal or human bite
- spreading redness, fever, red streaks, or pus
- wound on the face, hand, or over a joint
- tetanus shots unknown or last booster more than five years ago for a dirty wound
- swelling of lips or tongue, wheeze, faintness after a sting — 108 / 112
- inability to open the mouth, muscle spasms, or a wound that twitches
At WeClinic we will ask when you last had tetanus toxoid before we talk globules. Packages: Kanpur clinic page. Bring the vaccination record if you have it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Ledum palustre 30 used for?
Classically, puncture wounds and insect bites that feel cold and improve with cold, and rheumatism that starts in the feet. That is Boericke. It is not tetanus prevention.
Can Ledum replace a tetanus shot after a rusty nail?
No. The algorithm is wound care plus vaccine ± TIG. Ledum is not on it.
What is the dose of Ledum 30 for a mosquito bite?
A few globules once or twice after you have washed the area is typical self-care. Stop if swelling spreads or breathing changes.
Ledum 30 vs 200 — which for a black eye?
Nash’s old line is Ledum 200 for a black eye from a blow. 200 is not a stronger poison. Get examined if vision changes, the eye cannot move, or the orbit is tense.
Should I ice a Ledum puncture?
Cold better is a **symptom** in the materia medica. Clean first. Do not freeze a dirty wound. Seek care for deep punctures.
Is Ledum Q stronger than 30?
Q is plant extract. 30C is not. Do not drink marsh-tea tincture as first aid.
Can Ledum treat gout?
Upward-travelling foot pain is a classical rhyme, not a uric-acid drug. Acute gout needs medical diagnosis. See [gout](/blog/how-to-treat-gout-with-homeopathy).
Ledum vs Apis for a bee sting?
Apis is hot, puffy, stinging, better cold. Ledum is cold, pale, puncture-like. Anaphylaxis is adrenaline, not a differential.
Is Ledum safe for children?
30C has no realistic ledol if made properly. Punctures and bites in children still need cleaning and, when indicated, tetanus advice. Q is alcohol.
How long does Ledum take to work?
There is no evidence-based window. If redness spreads, fever starts, or the wound deepens over 24 hours, you need a clinician, not a higher potency.
Can I take Ledum with antibiotics?
A 30C has no plausible interaction. Do not skip a prescribed antibiotic for cellulitis.
Does Ledum prevent infection?
No. Cleaning, appropriate medical care, and vaccination do. Globules are not antiseptic.
